Dog Parks Near Chelsea & Downtown

Located just above Greenwich Village on Manhattan’s Lower West Side, Chelsea is one of New York City’s most desirable neighborhoods. It features luxury lofts and townhouses adjacent to old factories converted into art galleries, and Chelsea’s walkability makes it an ideal place for young professionals to live and work. As such, the neighborhood is also home to lots of dogs. Below are some of the best parks near Chelsea to take your furry friend for an outdoor adventure.

    Chelsea Waterside Dog Run

The Chelsea Waterside Dog Run is part of Hudson River Park and features a fantastic view. The park runs along the Hudson River and is a safe, double-gated spot for dogs to run and play. You’ll find well-maintained grass, benches for resting, and plenty of shade, and throughout the summer, this dog run touts two pools, which are perfect for keeping cool during summer’s peak. There’s also fresh running water, as well as a regular cleaning schedule. This is an ideal dog park for both dogs and owners. The city is working on expanding the dog park, so be sure to stay up-to-date on any and all improvements.

    Madison Square Park Dog Run

Located just outside of Chelsea is Madison Square Park Dog Run — otherwise known as “Jemmy’s Dog Run.” This spacious park is one of the best in all of NYC, thanks in large part to its thoughtful amenities. There are separate play areas for big and small dogs, double-gated entries, spigots for cooling off in the summer, and grounds covered in small pebbles, which are soft on dogs’ joints. There are also shaded areas for owners to sit and relax during the hot months. Dogs love running around and exploring this spot on W. 25th Street.

    Dog Parks

    Astro’s Dog Run

If you have an NYC dog license and proof of vaccination, you can take your dog to Astro’s Dog Run — a private area below the Lincoln Tunnel. This is a fenced-in area with a loose gravel base, which is easy on dogs’ joints and stays cool in the hotter months. It’s also not far from the water, which makes for a nice post-playing walk.

Pier 84 at Hudson River Park

Pier 84 is one of the longest piers in all of Manhattan, stretching nearly 1,000’. In addition to an interactive fountain, a large boathouse, and a sunbathing lawn, Pier 84 also has a fenced-in dog run. This is a mutually beneficial dog run for both owners and their pups, with plenty of activities for both. Cool off in the interactive fountain, or take your dog for a kayak ride before wearing them out at the dog run. Pier 84 is a great place for dogs and humans alike.

    Leroy Street Dog Park

Just south of Chelsea, the Leroy Street Dog Park is a Greenwich Village favorite. It was rebuilt a few years ago to include a dog pool, dog-friendly fountain, and benches for owners. It’s also a short walk away from Piers 45 and 46, so you can stretch your and your pup’s legs.

    Dog Parks

    Tribeca Dog Run

Pier 26’s Tribeca Dog Run is the newest addition to the Hudson River collective and is full of updated amenities. It features both a small dog park and a larger one, as well as a water fountain and sprinkler areas to keep your dog cool. Pier 25 and Pier 26 span over four miles and tend to be people’s favorite areas to gather, walk, and relax. This dog run is definitely a local favorite.

    Silver Towers Public Park

Situated between two apartment buildings, Silver Towers Public Park is a hidden gem of a public dog park. The park itself is lush, and because it’s relatively secret, it doesn’t see as much traffic as other options. Dogs can enjoy meeting an occasional companion, but it’s especially good for dogs who prefer a slower, less hectic place to run around.

Washington Square Park Large Dog Run

The Washington Square Park Dog Run is a perfectly sized dog park: large enough for your pup to really stretch their legs, but small enough so that you can always keep an eye on them. It’s a very popular run, so be prepared to interact with many people and dogs. The base is sand, making for easy playing and cleanup — especially with help from the on-site hose. This is a great dog run located right by one of Manhattan’s best attractions.

    Union Square Dog Run

Within the well-known Union Square Park is a small, fenced-in dog run with a gravel bottom, benches, and all the hustle and bustle of the city that New Yorkers love. If you’re out and about during the day, this is a very central option. Visitors note how many benches there are for such a small park and how well-maintained it is. Additionally, Union Square station is one of the biggest and most central in the city, making it an easy stopover for any dog walker.

    Stuyvesant Park Dog Run

During the day, Stuyvesant Square Park is like any other. Then, at night, this Rutherford Street green space transforms into Stuyvesant Dog Run, and it is known for being very welcoming and friendly. It’s a larger park with a concrete base. If your dog has trouble running on concrete, this might not be an ideal option, but it’s a fun spot for dogs who simply like being outdoors and socializing. It’s also a nice spot for owners, who note that this particular park is full of social pets and people.

    Soho Grand Dog Park

Recently renovated and doubled in size, Soho Grand Dog Park is one of the best in the city. It’s a private option, requiring you to submit an application for membership. The park’s goal is to bring together a community of dogs of all breeds and sizes and to encourage fun and play. It’s a beautiful option, with brand-new turf, park benches, and fire hydrant water stations. If you’re looking to spoil your pup (and yourself), then this is your Chelsea dog park of choice.
